My Corvette came to me as a surprise. Over the years my wife has pulled off some good ones on my birthday and at Christmas, but this was a doozy!
On our wedding anniversary number 22 in July, 2001, we did the usual. We went out to dinner, and stopped at a neighborhood pub for a few libations afterward.
On our arrival home, I saw that our 3 kids (youngest one 18 at that time) were standing in the driveway. Also present was my son-in-law and a nephew.
Now this was pretty unusual, but I figured it was a little get together for our anniversary, no big deal, right?
Well, I pull in the driveway in my trusty old Caprice, hit the garage door opener.... and stop dead!
There in my side of the garage is parked a CORVETTE !! Not just a Corvette, but as I was to learn, an LT4! And Competition Yellow! It had about 20 yellow and white balloons tied to it. It was quite festive.
Needless to say, I was floored. I was speechless. I was dumbfounded. I look from the garage to my wife, back to the garage, back to wife, several times. Linda leans over, gives me a peck on the cheek and says "Happy Anniversary Honey!".
I was so shocked I didn’t, no couldn’t, get out of the car for about 5 or 10 minutes.
While we were out on the town, my son-in-law had driven the Vette over from where my wife had hidden it for 2 MONTHS! Yes she had seen it on a car lot and stopped to check it out because of the color, and bought it on the spot 2 months previous. She hid the Vette at her sisters house all that time.
Well, when I finally get out and walk up to it, I just couldn’t believe it. I kept asking Linda if this was real. Was it a joke? This isn’t really ours, right? It was real all right! BUT, and this is a big one! I had about 3 or 4 beers in me. I COULDN"T DRIVE IT! I had to wait a few hours! Can you imagine what that was like?!
Now for a little preface to this story (at the end?). Linda and I had been talking for a year or more about getting a Corvette after our youngest was out of high school. It was just that, talk. There wasn’t any firm plan, or even a discussion of what generation, year, auto, stick, or any details. Then as if she had read my mind she comes up with a Yellow LT4.
What a woman, I thank God every day for bringing us together. Yea, she’s a keeper.
